Abstract Naringin has been shown to exhibit satisfying iron chelation capacity. Considering the side effects of routinely-used iron chelator (desferrioxamine, DFO), we decided to evaluate the iron chelation potency of naringin to discover whether or not it can be a promising natural substitute for treatment of excessive iron-related diseases. 35 mice were classified into five groups of 7 and subjected to iron dextran administration to induce the iron-overload condition. Iron-overloaded mice were then treated with normal saline (as control), naringin or DFO Morphology changes, and iron deposition in liver tissues were studied using H&E and Perl’s staining. The results revealed that naringin is more potent than DFO in removing excessive iron ions deposited in liver tissues, indicating that naringin is a promising natural compound for therapy of iron overload disorders.

SUMMARY: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is described as a neurological condition, resulting from continuous degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Currently, most treatments for neurodegenerative diseases are palliative. In traditional Iranian medicine, Citrus aurantium flower extract is used to treat some neural diseases, such as sleep disorders and anxiety. The tendency towards the use of medicinal herbs for the treatment of diseases (eg, seizure) is growing. Accordingly, we evaluated the antioxidant effects of C. aurantium flowers and analyzed their protective effects against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-mediated oxidative stress. In this study, 150 mM of 6-OHDA was used to induce cellular damage. Also, MTT assay was performed to analyze cellular viability. Fluorescence spectrophotometry was performed to measure the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and calcium levels. Based on the findings, 6-OHDA could reduce cell viability. We also analyzed the effects of C. aurantium against neurotoxicity. The intracellular levels of ROS and calcium greatly improved in cells exposed to 6-OHDA. SH-SY5Y cell incubation with C. aurantium (400 and 600 mg/mL) induced protective effects and decreased the biochemical markers of cell apoptosis. According to the findings, C. aurantium showed protective effects against neurotoxicity, caused by 6-OHDA; these protective properties were accompanied by antiapoptotic features. According to the findings, it seems that hydromethanolic C. aurantium extract can be used to prevent seizures.

RESUMEN: La enfermedad de Parkinson (EP) se describe como una afección neurológica que resulta de la degeneración continua de las neuronas dopaminérgicas. Actualmente, la mayoría de los tratamientos para las enfermedades neurodegenerativas son paliativos. En la medicina tradicional iraní, el extracto de flor de Citrus aurantium se usa para tratar algunas enfermedades neurológicas, como los trastornos del sueño y la ansiedad. La tendencia hacia el uso de las medicinas para el tratamiento de enfermedades (por ejemplo, convulsiones) está creciendo. Por consiguiente, el objetivo de este trabajo consistió en evaluar los efectos antioxidantes de las flores de C. aurantium y analizar sus efectos protectores contra el estrés oxidativo mediado por la 6- hidroxidopamina (6-OHDA). En este estudio, se usó 150 mM de 6-OHDA para inducir daño celular. Además, se realizó un ensayo de MTT para analizar la viabilidad celular. La espectrofotometría de fluorescencia se realizó para medir las especies reactivas de oxígeno (ROS) intracelulares y los niveles de calcio. En base a los hallazgos, 6-OHDA podría reducir la viabilidad celular. También analizamos los efectos de C. aurantium contra la neurotoxicidad. Los niveles intracelulares de ROS y calcio se expandieron a las células expuestas a 6-OHDA. La incubación de células SH-SY5Y con C. aurantium (400 y 600 mg / ml) indujo efectos protectores y disminuyó los marcadores bioquímicos de la apoptosis celular. De acuerdo con los hallazgos, C. aurantium mostró efectos protectores contra la neurotoxicidad, causada por 6-OHDA; estas propiedades protectoras fueron acompañadas por características antiapoptóticas. Según los hallazgos, parece que el extracto hidrometanólico de C. aurantium se puede usar para prevenir las convulsiones.

Cranial capacity and brain weight are important measurements in the study of racial/ethnic differences. Using linear (LeePearson's) formula, brain weight and cranial capacity were estimated in 398 normal 17 to 20-year-old males (200 native Fars and 198 Turkman) males in Northern Iran. The dimensions of the head measured with spreading caliper and auricular head spanner. The mean±S.D of brain weight and cranial capacity in native Fars males were 1343.45±102.37 cm3, and 1390.47±105.95 g, and that of Turkmans were 1163.02±115.76 cm3 and 1203.73±119.81 g, respectively. Cerebral Index was 3.40 ±0.37 % and 2.52 ±0.37 % in Native Fars and Turkmans, respectively and cerebral quotient was higher in Turkmans (8.34) than Native Fars males (7.95). This study showed, the effect of ethnic factor influences the brain weight of 17-20 year-old males in Northern Iran.

La capacidad craneal y el peso del cerebro son mediciones importantes en el estudio de las diferentes etnias. Se estimó el peso del cerebro y la capacidad craneal usando la fórmula lineal de Lee-Pearson, en 398 hombres de 17 a 20 años de edad (200 nativos Fars y 198 Turcomanos) en el norte de Irán. Las dimensiones de la cabeza se midieron con caliper deslizante y con una llave de Todd, para la medición auricular. La media ± D.S. del peso del cerebro y la capacidad craneal en hombres nativos Fars fue de 1343,45±102,37 cm3, y 1390,47±105,95 g, y la de los turcomanos fue de 1163,02±115,76 cm3 y 1203,73 ± 119,81 g, respectivamente. El índice cerebral fue de 3,40± 0,37 % y 2,52 ± 0,37 % en nativos Fars y turcomanos, respectivamente, y el cociente cerebral fue mayor en los turcomanos (8,34) que en los hombres Fars (7.95). Este estudio demostró que el efecto del factor étnico influye en el peso del cerebro en hombres de 17-20 años del norte de Irán.

Several animal model studies have shown that Diabetes mellitus can affect on the activity of hippocampus astrocytes, but these studies reported controversial findings. This study was done to evaluate the preventive and treatment effect of Urtica dioica (U. dioica) on astrocytes density in the CA1 and CA3 subfields of hippocampus of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Twenty-eight male albino Wistar rats were randomly allocated equally into control, diabetic, U. dioica treatment and U. dioica preventive groups. Hyperglycemia was induced by STZ (80 mg/kg/BW). One week after injection of the streptozotocin, animals in treatment group were received hydroalcoholic extract of U. dioica (100 mg/kg/BW /day) for 4 weeks by intraperitoneally. In preventive group, diabetic rats were received 100 mg/kg/BW/ daily hydroalcoholic extract of U. dioica for 5 days before STZ injection. Then, animals were sacrificed and coronal sections were taken from the right dorsal hippocampus, stained with PTAH. The area densities of the astrocytes were measured. The number of astrocytes in CA1 of controls, diabetic treatment and preventive groups was 19.00±5.5, 17.14±6.4, 21±8.1 and 16.48±3.2, respectively. The densities of astrocytes in CA3 of controls, diabetic, treatment and preventive groups were 25.45±7.60, 21.54±7.5, 23.75±5.6 and 19.89±3.8, respectively. The density of astrocytes in diabetic rats reduced in comparison with controls (P<0.05). In CA1 and CA3, in spite of preventive administration, treatment of diabetic rats with U. dioica significantly increased the astrocytes. This study showed that treatment with U. dioica extract can help compensate for the CA1 and CA3 subfields of hippocampus astrocytes in diabetic rats.

Varios estudios en modelos animales han mostrado que la diabetes mellitus puede afectar la actividad de los astrocitos del hipocampo, pero estos resultados son controvertidos. Este estudio se realizó para evaluar el efecto preventivo y de tratamiento de la Urtica dioica (U. dioica) en la densidad de los astrocitos en los subcampos CA1 y CA3 del hipocampo en ratas diabéticas inducidas por estreptozotocina (STZ). Veintiocho ratas Wistar albinas macho fueron asignadas al azar por igual en grupos control, diabético, con tratamiento U. dioica y preventivo con U.dioica. La hiperglucemia se indujo por STZ (80 mg/kg/peso corporal). Una semana después, los animales del grupo tratamiento recibieron el extracto hidroalcohólico de U. dioica (100 mg/kg/peso corporal/día) durante 4 semanas vía intraperitoneal. El grupo preventivo, recibió 100 mg/kg/peso corporal/día de extracto hidroalcohólico U. dioica durante 5 días antes de la inyección de STZ. Los animales fueron sacrificados, se tomaron secciones coronales del hipocampo dorsal derecho y se tiñeron con PTAH. Fueron medidas las densidades de área de los astrocitos. El número de astrocitos en CA1 de los grupos de ratas control, diabéticas, con tratamiento de U. dioica y preventivo con U. dioica fue 19,00±5,5, 17,14±6,4, 21±8,1 y 16,48±3,2, respectivamente. Las densidades de los astrocitos en CA3 de los grupos de ratas control, diabéticas, con tratamiento de U. dioica y preventivo con U. dioica fue 25,45±7,60, 21,54±7,5, 23,75±5,6 y 19,89±3,8, respectivamente. La densidad de los astrocitos en las ratas diabéticas se redujo en comparación con los controles (P <0,05). En CA1 y CA3, a pesar de la administración preventiva, sólo el tratamiento de ratas diabéticas con U. dioica aumentó significativamente los astrocitos. Este estudio mostró que el tratamiento con extracto de U. dioica puede ayudar a compensar los astrocitos de los subcampos CA1 y CA3 del hipocampo en ratas diabéticas.

The pyramidal cell density of CA1 hippocampal subfield following STZ-induced diabetes in young rats were studied. 12 male albino 6-week Wistar rats were allocated equally in groups of normal and diabetic. Hyperglycemia induced by Streptozotocin (80 mg/kg) in animals of diabetic group. After 5 weeks of study, all the rats were sacrificed and coronal sections were taken from dorsal hippocampal formation of the right cerebral hemispheres and stained with crysel violet. The area densities of the CA1 pyramidal cells were measured and compared among two groups. No significant difference between the densities of two experimental groups was found. The results can arise from the short period of diabetes and also the possible regenerative processes in developing brain of the young diabetic rats which compensated significant diabetes-induced neuronal loss.

La densidad de las células piramidales del subcampo CA1 hipocampal resultantes de diabetes inducida por STZ en ratas jóvenes fue estudiada. 12 ratas albinas Wistar macho, de 6 semanas fueron asignadas equitativamente en grupos normal y diabético. La hiperglicemia fue inducida por Streptozotocin (80 mg/kg) en los animales del grupo de diabéticos. Después de 5 semanas de estudio, todas las ratas se sacrificaron y se tomaron secciones coronales de la formación del hipocampo dorsal de los hemisferios cerebrales derecho y se tiñeron con violeta crisol. Las áreas de densidad de las células piramidales CA1 fueron medidas y comparadas entre los dos grupos. No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre las densidades de los dos grupos experimentales. Los resultados pueden explicarse debido al corto periodo de diabetes y también por la posibilidad de procesos regenerativos del cerebro en desarrollo de las ratas jóvenes diabéticas los cuales compensan significativamente la pérdida neuronal en la diabetes inducida.

Cephalometry or measurement of human head is used in identification, forensic medicine, plastic surgery, orthodontics, archeology and examine the differences between races and ethnicities. This descriptive investigation was undertaken on 198 young Turkman males to determine the cephalic index and head phenotype among them in Gorgan, North of Iran. In this study cephalic index was determined by classic cephalometric method. Mean and standard deviation of cephalic index was 80.4 + 4. Based on the cephalic index, the head shape of 42.4% of individuals were brachycephalic, 7.6% hyperbrachycephalic, 40.9% mesocephalic and 8.1% dolicocephalic. This research showed that Turkman individuals have typical brachycephalic phenotype. In comparison to other studies, we can conclude that the ethnic factor has an effective role on head phenotype in North of Iran

La cefalometría o mediciones de la cabeza humana son usadas en identificación, Medicina Forense, Cirugía Plástica, Ortodoncia, Arqueología y tiene la finalidad de examinar las diferencias entre razas y etnias. Esta investigación descriptiva fue realizada en 198 hombres jóvenes turcos en Gorgan, Norte de Irán, para determinar el índice cefálico y el fenotipo de la cabeza. El índice cefálico fue determinado por el método de cefalometría clásica. La media y desviación estándar del índice cefálico fue de 80.4 + 4. Basado en el índice cefálico, la forma de la cabeza era braquicefálica en el 42.4%, hiperbraquicefálica en el 7.6%, mesocefálica en el 40.9% y dolicocefálica en el 8,1% de los individuos. Esta invetigación mostró que los individuos turcos presentan un típico fenotipo braquicefálico. En comparación con otros estudios, podemos concluir que el factor étnico tiene un efectivo rol en el fenotipo cefálico en el Norte de Irán
